6 Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy

When you think about the health of your smile, you are probably mostly thinking about your teeth. However, strong teeth must be supported by healthy gums. The surprising thing is that gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects approximately half of American adults over the age of 30. Brush Twice a Day
You should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day in order to remove food and plaque from the surface of your teeth. Also give your tongue a scrub in order to clear away bacteria. Floss Each Day
You should be flossing at least once a day in order to remove food debris and plaque that is in hard-to-reach places. It doesn’t really matter the time of day that you floss, just that you are doing it on a daily basis. This way, you can keep the area between your teeth and beneath the gumline clean.
Regular Cleanings
When you go to the dentist for regular cleanings, plaque and tartar can be properly removed before causing further issues like tooth decay and gingivitis. If your dentist spots any signs of periodontal disease, it can be treated early on through gum disease treatment before leading to further irreversible problems like gum recession, loose teeth, tooth loss, and bone shrinkage.
Don’t Smoke
Did you know that people who smoke are twice as likely to develop gum disease in the future? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking weakens your immune system and makes it more difficult to fight off gum infections. It also makes it more difficult for your damaged gum tissue to heal.
Use Fluoridated Toothpaste
Your toothpaste isn’t doing much for your smile unless it contains fluoride. This natural mineral is used in dentistry because of its ability to protect teeth against decay. Once your toothbrush contains fluoride and has the ADA seal of acceptance, the rest is up to you.
Use Mouthwash
You can find therapeutic mouthwashes over the counter. They help to reduce plaque, prevent gingivitis, and reduce the speed that tartar develops. They also help to remove food particles and debris from your mouth.
