Not everyone is the biggest fan of the dentist—whether they’re made anxious by oral healthcare or just don’t know if they can make the time to get to their dentist’s office, all kinds of people refrain from getting the preventive oral healthcare when they should.

If that sounds like you, you should know that there are all kinds of things that you can to do to make your next dental checkup easy. Here are some tips that can help you get the care you need without any stress.

Preparation

Before your appointment, ensure you have all necessary documents and information. Bring your dental insurance card, a list of medications you’re taking, and any previous dental records if you’re visiting a new dentist. Practice good oral hygiene leading up to the appointment by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash. This not only makes the dentist’s job easier but can also lead to a more positive assessment. If you have dental anxiety, consider scheduling your appointment at a time when you’re least likely to feel stressed, such as in the morning.

Communication

Be open and honest with your dentist about your dental history, any pain or discomfort you’re experiencing, and any concerns or fears you have about the visit. This allows the dentist to tailor the checkup to your needs, ensuring you’re comfortable and any issues are addressed promptly. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the procedures, what to expect during the visit, or tips for better oral hygiene. Clear communication helps build a trusting relationship with your dentist, making future visits easier.

Comfort

Make the dental visit as comfortable as possible by bringing along items that help you relax, like a stress ball. Many dental offices now offer amenities like TV screens, soothing music, and even aromatherapy to help patients relax. If you suffer from significant anxiety, discuss sedation options with your dentist. Options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedatives can help you stay calm during the procedure. Additionally, wearing comfortable clothing and practicing deep breathing techniques can also help you stay relaxed throughout the appointment.
